THE CLUB
Founded in 1969 by a group of enthusiasts, York Squash Club initially boasted two squash courts and received significant financial contributions from the Rowntree and Shepherd companies, both based in York. Indeed, many company employees were among the early members of the Club.
With two courts added at a later date the courts were – and still are – located at York Sports Club which has excellent facilities for cricket, rugby and tennis on Shipton Road in Clifton.
Members of the club soon achieved national success and became UK national champions in 1973, runners-up in 1977 and semi-finalists in 1978. The root of the club’s success lay in attracting top-quality players from its early days; successful national and international squash players included Ian Nuttall, Ian Robinson and Steve Hodgson.
Today, the Club currently has 240 members – 25 more than last year – and this includes 17 female and 16 junior members. We encourage playing squash for fun and fitness and welcome new members of all ages. As well as an excellent mini-league and other competitions which are open to all members, we have a well-attended Sunday evening Club Night, enter a number of teams into the York and District League and offer excellent coaching programmes.
Looking to the future, we aim to be the best squash club in York and District. This requires a continuous programme of investment in our facilities, coaching, teams, mini leagues, events and competitions as well as improvements to our website and electronic booking systems.
To achieve these goals we will undertake a rolling programme to upgrade our facilities and redecorate, in line with a three year plan for capital and revenue expenditure. Plans are also underway for our fiftieth anniversary celebrations in 2019.
